Marvin Neumann was born in Minneapolis and raised in the Midwest (Minnesota and Illinois). He received his B.A. in Music Education from the University of California at Los Angeles, and an M.A. in Composition from Occidental College (Los Angeles). He did post-graduate study with composers Roy Harris and Barney Childs and studied conducting with Larry Christiansen and Herbert Blomstedt. He has been a music educator in Southern Californa and abroad for more than 30 years. While in Thailand, he was director/conductor for the Bangkok Combined Chorale and Bangkok Opera Society. He has conducted institute orchestras at California State University (Northridge and Los Angeles), the University of Redlands and Occidental College (Suzuki). He currently conducts the Crown City Chamber Players, a 60-piece orchestra in Pasadena, California, as well as PSYCO, a summer youth orchestra. He is presently Music Director at First United Methodist Church in Whittier, California and has guest conducted the San Fernando Valley Master Chorale and the Hollywood Master Chorale.
Maestro Neumann is also a professional singer: he toured with Roger Wagner and has sung with the New York City Opera as well as the Los Angeles Bach Festival and San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival. He is currently a singer with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and has sung on the soundtracks of three recent movies. He is Past-President of the Lost Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Church Musicians. As a composer, Neumann has written for choir, chamber ensemble, band and orchestra. His choral compositions include music for the church as well as the concert hall, from small anthems and arrangements to a mass. College bands at UCLA, USC and Cal-Tech have performed his music and a chamber work was broadcast over KUSC, a local classical radio station.
