CHORAL MUSIC BY MARCO AB COUTINHO

  • CQ2710    Frevo Lambido (Lickety-Split),  for mixed choir (SATB) a cappella, 8 pp., $1.95.
See sample pages. Listen to midi realization. A frevo is a very fast dance-driven march derived from Brazilian miltary band polkas, now often sung with lyrics, but in this case with patter syllables. The fast tempo, tricky rhythms and articulation of the syllables will challenge a choir, but the result is spectacular!

  • CQ2615     O Magnum Mysterium,  for mixed choir (SATB) a cappella, with tenor and soprano soli, 9 pp., $1.95.
See sample pages. In Latin. Coutinho’s setting begins in Renaissance style but soon begins to use a contrast of dissonant passages with homophonic cadences, when the ‘mystery’ comes, if only momentarily, into clear focus. The repeated Beata Virgo section utilizes solo voices soaring above the more muted chorus until the chorus responds without soloists in its own statement of admiration. The concluding Alleluia section is a spirited ‘crowd scene’ of overlapping voices who at last come together in the splendid coda which calls upon the full resources of the chorus. Approx. performance duration: 5'46". Difficulty level 5. Listen to mp3 recording from Madrigal de Brasília, conducted by Éder Camúzis.
