MARCO AB COUTINHO


Marco Aurelio Brito Coutinho was born in 1952 in Rio de Janeiro. He moved to Brasília in 1972 and entered the Escola de Música de Brasília (EMB) where he is now Professor of Choral Singing in the Center for Professional Education. His studies in composition, orchestral and choral conducting, and singing, have taken him to Argentina, Uruguay, Denmark, Portugal, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Venezuela, Finland, Australia and the USA. He has been particularly active as a singer in the chorus of many operas and, since 1979 as a member (and assistant director) of the prestigious Madrigal de Brasília. He is a founding member of the Brazilian Association of Choral Directors, a founding member and vice-president of the Lyric Society of Brasília, a member of the Brazilian Society of Contemporary Music, and the founder and director of two choirs—the women's chorus Ars Femina, and the men's chorus Actus Musicus.

Notable in Brazil for coordinating public educational programs and concerts of music from Sweden and Japan, Coutinho was decorated in 1989 by the King of Sweden for his services. He travels widely in Latin and Central America as a lecturer and choral clinician and has composed nearly 40 instrumental and choral works.
