Australian composer Calvin Bowman was born in 1972 and makes
his home in Olinda, Victoria. He is a graduate of the University of
Melbourne’s Conservatorium of Music, amd received his
doctoral degree in organ from Yale University in 2005.
He is currently Artistic
Director at Saint Michael’s Uniting Church, Collins Street, Melbourne and
organist at Melbourne Grammar School.
Described by Philip Glass as ‘a uniquely talented musician,’ Bowman has composed works
for both voice and instruments. His Oboe
Concerto (2002), and other works mark him as a rising star on the world
scene. A student of the piano, organ and harpsichord, Bowman is a
frequent recitalist and recording artist (especially with Australia Pro Arte).
He presented the complete Bach organ works to critical acclaim in 1995
and was the featured artist for the opening of the restored Melbourne Town
Hall organ in 2001.
The former Dean of the Yale School of Music has called Bowman
“truly gifted, (with) a natural ability to create, and a really fine ear for
harmonic logic.” His music is “exceptionally well crafted, imaginative and
characterized by the qualities of restraint, refinement and elegance . . .
music that is at once intelligent and accessible” (composer Graeme Koehne).
