All day long the harvest minding,
All day long the hay bales binding,
I have left my love behind,
He's far away and out of mind!
Oh, man! No one can
Catch the little ducklings.
Momma, oh, you don't know
Which one is my darling.
Don't go swimming, little ducklings,
Never to the islands far away!
Don't believe them, ladies,
Don't believe the tender words they say.
Wet wood in the forest burns,
It smolders there among the pines.
There must be a girl somewhere,
Who'll fall in love with me sometime.
There he goes with a load of hay,
Tries to turn the corner fast;
Tears the harness, breaks away,
Headlong from the cart is cast!
Little boat sinking,
My sweetheart drowning,
Traitor, you have been untrue.
If you drown may the Devil take you!
In the cottage, girls are singing.
Evening falls upon the wood.
You can tell there is no question,
Village life is very good!
