Like a lonely forest rose the little orphan grows.
My poor youth has been spent in service sad with many woes,
Sent from one house to another from the age of twelve years old.
Here I am rocking the baby, there I am milking the cow.
I was born a bonny lass, very poor tho' bonny,
Very poor and ragged.
That's the reason nobody ever wants to marry me
Walking with a youthful air down to the city square
Where all my girlfriends gaily play,
Then for me, orphan girl, they weep and pray.
Little birds have their nests, even a wolf has her son.
I alone, orphan girl with nobody, have no one.
Like a lonely forest rose the little orphan grows.
